Description: Earliest Onion cultivation was as long as 5000 years ago. Onion have more than 300 species of which 70 are cultivated. The onion is a hardy biennial grown as an annual from seed or from sets (small bulbs). It is usually grown for its firm, ripe bulb, but also grown for its immature stems (shallow and green onions). These two types are known as "bulbous" and "bunching". Bulb is the part that is used as a spice. India's average production is 4-4.5 million MTs.
